When Leaders Become Followers
The concept of leadership has always been widely accepted to incorporate enterprise performance
and management. However, followership has also been a frequent trait expressed by leaders in the corporate
world. According to Epitropaki, Kark, Mainemelis & Lord (2017), followership refers to a set of skills
which are used to complete leadership which is integral to the administrative process. It is important to note
that if leadership is an important component that contributes to corporate performance, it must have a
relationship with followership. Therefore, leaders should be an excellent follower to complement other
corporate functions. The fact that everybody in an organization can express both leadership and followership
depending on the circumstances illustrates the paradox of corporate followership. The paper will explore
how a leader becomes a follower through judgment, ego management, loyalty and competency improvement.
Leaders must take the direction of a follower by undertaking the underlying obligations to the
business. Consequently, it ensures that the managerial direction approach upholds ethics and output
performance. The principle of judgment in followership enables a leader to know the differences between a
directive and how to handle subordinates if they fail to adhere to or honor their directives. For instance, a
leader may delegate a task which does not belong to an employee. Subsequently, the employee may opt not
to undertake the task because they lack the skill or knowledge. Carsten (2017) posits that good followers are
great workers as they contribute to the corporate output performance and organization. Thus, leaders use
good judgment as followers to reason with employees in such situations thereby making them followers
rather than leaders.
Secondly, leaders become followers through the management of their egos during work. Ego is a
term used when referring to an individuals sense of self-importance or esteem. It is a mental concept which
relates to the conscious and unconscious to facilitate personal identity. In every organization, people have
differing egos as every individual is unique. A persons ego is responsible for the way an individual interacts
and associates with other people in society. Likewise, a leaders ego affects the relationship between leaders
and their followers.
