Religion in International Political Theory

Be as it may, religion plays an important role in todays international politics. Religion has become one of the popular topics in discussions regarding international politics after the 9/11 terrorist attack. However, the primary canonical works of IR theory that continue to shape much empirical scholarly work such as, realism, liberalism, and constructivism barely mention the concept of religion in their discussion. Few scholars have begun to discuss the concept of religion and international affairs, but focusing more on the current event talk, comparative domestic politics, and area studies. Hurd (2015), noted that this neglect of religion in the mainstream of IR is because scholars find it challenging to integrate the concept of religion on their nominal conceptual frameworks. As such, this paper discusses the concept of religion, particularly Islam using international relation theory and ethical perspective.
