In a lifetime of experiences, one goes through quite a lot. The most of these experiences that
significantly affects an individual are the ones that are related to religion. In her journal, Salvation, Langston
Hughes reflects about a religious experience that brought a lot of turmoil in her life (Hughes, 2002)
. The experience made her not believe in God anymore. People often undergo the same religious experiences
throughout life, trying to make sense of the many religious beliefs that exist in this world. Most of these
experiences, like the one bestowed upon young children are what I detest in life. Modern life, however,
depicts religion as a distinct part of life that is an extension of the need for humans to find meaning in life.
The journal made me reflect quite a lot concerning my religious life. After all, the important aspect of
religion is the belief in a higher power that controls life. As such, one cannot go through life without having
experienced something that individuals connected with their view of the world. Just as Langston Hughess
journal elaborates the nature of most religious experiences that do not have a religious or spiritual impact in
ones life, most of the modern day experiences I went through that are of religious nature often left me with
many questions about a higher spiritual being (Hughes, 2002). From a personal point of view, I did not like
the part of Langston Hughes experience where adults influence the childrens religious choice without
explaining to them the full nature of religion.
As in the case of Langston Hughes, she feels that she has betrayed the trust of many people by lying
in the temple of God, I also have been found in the same situation by giving in to religious beliefs that I do
not believe in making me feel unworthy of salvation. However, one unique aspect of her experience lies in
the fact that she feels sad for lying about something that she does not believe in (Hughes, 2002). This is one
of the admirable parts in her elaboration of her experience in Salvation. It is undeniable that every individual
in life responds differently to different circumstances. The basic thing in life is however how these
experiences affect how we view different things about living in the future.
