More than often, it is surprisingly difficult to justify why we should be moral. Some actions such as
lies have raised a lot of debate on the advantages of being moral. There are different criterias and notions
developed by philosophers on what is and what is not genuinely moral and how to judge what is moral.
However, these ideologies and criterias are not so clear. On the same note, the benefit or reason why we
ought to be moral tends to be obscure sometimes. However, to get an answer to the question Why we should
be moral? one should understand the philosophical foundations of morality, motivation to be moral and what
morality demands. This paper will discuss the theory of ethics as proposed by Kant and Mill to answer the
question why we should be moral
Kants ideologies regarding ethics could possibly provide a reply on why we ought to be moral.
However, it is paramount to understand and consider his basic ideas on ethics. The philosophical
foundations of Kath ethics are differentiating things that are merely good as a means of things that are good
by themselves or intrinsically good (Kant, 2017). Immanuel Kath posits that a good will is the only attribute
that is good in itself because, its intrinsic value is unconditional and is not underpinned by the outcome of
the action (Kant, 2017).
On the other hand, other good attributes like intelligence, courage, or judgment are necessary in
many facets, but they can be tremendously bad if they are made use of based on the will that is not good (
Aristotle and Happiness, 2018). According to Kant, reason has a true purpose of producing a will that is not
a means to an end but a good in itself (Kant, 2017). The human rational capability is not meant for getting
happiness since any other dispositions would have served the end purpose more effectually. Instead, the
purpose of reasoning is to attain an excellent condition which Kant refers to a duty. We are in a position to
attain true freedom because of our rational ability. When a person is acting based on the rational law, then he
or she is performing his duty.
