Introduction
The McKinneyVento Homeless Assistance Act defines a homeless person as someone who lacks a
proper, regular, and accessible nighttime home (Donley, 2017). The primary causes of homelessness include
economic, mental, and family causes. Poor economic condition as evident during the global recession leads
to homelessness. This condition is so because poor economic environment leads to unemployment, lowpaying jobs, and elimination of pension consequently leading to homelessness. Moreover, family issues like
wrangles and divorce render one party of the union homeless (Friedman, 2017), after the other members
employ legal ways for eviction. Nevertheless, the U.S administration lack any programs for homeless people
save for the McKinneyVento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987. This program assists the homeless people
by allocating funding to serve them. The initiative assists the homeless people to gain access to healthcare
services, in addition to finding affordable housing. Nevertheless, there is a widespread case of
criminalization against homeless people in the U.S.
This paper will discuss the issue of criminalization among the homeless individuals in the U.S.
Moreover, the paper will discuss on how this problem relates to forensic nursing.
Criminalization against Homeless people in the U.S
The U.S constitution guarantees the right and freedom of all citizens regardless of their class, race,
and economic status. The law of land also protects homeless people. However, homeless people are facing
the issue of criminalization. Firstly, the chances of a homeless person being charged with petty crimes are
much higher than their counterparts owning a home. The issues like idling and standing without any
meaningful business may land a homeless person to jail, while other non-homeless individuals might do the
same without being given the same treatment. Moreover, it is a common scene to see a homeless person
hiding from the police and security guard. Their contact with the above security personnel is likely to land
them in jail.
