Week 10- Discussion, ethics
Ethics, unlike morals and morality, relates to the theory of right deed and the greater good. On the
other hand, morals show the practice of ethics. Hence, without ethics, it becomes difficult to tell what morals
are. Philosophers for a long time have taken their time to observe and analyze various ethics and morals.
One of the greatest philosophers Aristotle dwelt so much on various ethics including naturalism. Other
philosophers also came and left landmark in the world through their contribution to understanding the
various ethics. For this assignment, it is crucial to discuss just two philosophers concerning ethics. These
philosophers are Martha Nussbaum and Rosalind Hursthouse.
Under Martha Nussbaum, it is proper to discuss two of his main ethical concerns. One of the ethics is
ethics of intimate relationships and virtue ethics and care ethics. Martha talks about issues that affect
intimate relationships, and she included anger, forgiveness, and trust. According to her, it is indeed
surprising that some spouses after a little fight or misunderstanding resolve to kill children just to inflict pain
in the betrayer. Although some people may not be condemned since it is just an act of anger, killing is going
too far. There are other better solutions to the matter. Concerning the virtue of ethics, Nussbaum asserts that
while choosing how to live, we should avoid considering what would make this world better, but rather we
should consider more on assessing what kind of moral agents are we (Nussbaum, 1999). Thus, these virtues
of ethics do not give us rules on how to live. Care ethics, on the contrary, argues that the foundational
grounds of our ethical concerns should be our emotional responses to them. In addition, care ethics claim
that special relationships give rise to special moral duties.
Hurthouse on the other hand, concerning virtue ethics claims that moral philosophy needs to be more
Aristotelian. She further argues that indeed virtue ethics can tell us what to do but it can hardly make life
easy for us. in that case, she was not so much interested in utilitarian and Kantians but wanted to make her
claim clear. In her three claims, the last one is what surprises many people because Hurthouse claimed that it
is natural and rational, in all the objective manner for a person to be virtuous. Regardless all the other claims
against and supporting virtue ethics, people need to be virtuous. In her book Ethics, Humans and Other
Animals: An introduction to readings, Hurthhouse introduces the reader to three standards of approaches in
nowadays ethical theory (Hursthouse, 2000). These standards include; utilitarianism, rights, and virtue
ethics. Under utilitarianism, the author claims that the measure of something is in its usefulness. If
something is useful then ethically it is worthy. Virtue ethics, on the other hand, claims that for an individual
to be virtuous, then they should fully satisfy the fact that they are moral agents.
