Development psychology is a scientific measure of a persons life, concerning their growth and
consistency. In the process of a persons growth, changes occur concerning their behavior, feelings, and
thinking. Development psychology theories tend to concentrate much on a persons childhood stages since it
is the period, which the experiences of change manifest itself mostly. Typically, the success of development
psychology theories encompasses studies on biological, social, emotional, and cognitive processes of a
person. One of the developmental questions on growth is on the Continuity vs. Discontinuity concept.
The argument among Development Psychologists narrows to whether the development process is
gradual or characterized by age-specific periods. Psychologists in support of continuity development
believe that it is a normative process, which is devoid of any interruptions in the stages of a persons life.
This means that it is a smooth process, where individual accumulates their actions or behaviors from
previously acquired knowledge. According to the developmental psychologist, Heinz Werner, an example of
quantitative continuity change is the gradual increase in a child's weight, a condition labeled as usual
(Graves & Muller, 2017).
Conversely, development psychologists in support for discontinuity development believe that a
person in the process of growth has a series of discrete stages, which they must accomplish before moving to
the next step. In this growth stages, a person exhibits different behavior courtesy of biological changes. This
means that people will undergo similar growth stages in their lives but at different rates because of
discontinuity development. For example, after hitting puberty, a person will experience a hunger drive and a
curiosity drive. However, at this stage, individuals will begin to have different thoughts and behaviors that
are distinct from their age mates.
