Dance in Arts

Dance is an integral part of ceremonies such as weddings. In most instances, the best dancer gets compliments because of their dancing. The basic definition of dance is the movement of the body of a person or an object that match the speed and rhythm of specific music. According to Elizabeth Dempster (2010), dance is an emphasis on spectacle and virtuoso display. Dempster (2010) pointed out that dance is much of a female-centered movement; with the primary concentration being on the imagery and the subject matter it employs (248). The understanding of dance is through the analysis of my experience and the West African dance.

My experience

For me, the dance that I align myself with is the Country-western two-step dance. My understanding of the dance is that it originates from different areas of the U.S. The type of the one-step dance, which I associate myself with is the Texas two-step dance. In the dance, there is a leader and the follower. The leader (mostly a man) leads a woman during the dancing session. The leader determines the coverage of the dance floor. The current two-step dance is quite different from the previous version, where there is the infusion of music such as disco, Rock, Blues, and Hip Hop among others. Consequently, the new move takes SlowSlow-Quick-Quick tempo. Understanding a single dance from a single community is not enough to argue on dance. To appreciate dance as art, there is a need for the comparison of a different dance from a diverse community. In this case, the comparison of Country-western two-step dance will be with West African dance.
