Article 1: The Greasy Lake
T. Coraghessan Boyle
has been famous in using fictions locations in his literary works to base stories
about real-life situations. For instance, the author in his work the Greasy Lake uses a fictitious location to
analyze a critical issue, which was affecting the younger population during the 1970s. Young people were
facing an identity crisis and hormones pressure. Their behavior identifies with the theme of Primitiveness.
The narrator and his friends believe that they are above life and they were above the law and they could
engage in actions against the societal norms. For instance, according to the author, we were all dangerous
characters then. We wore torn-up leather jackets, slouched around with toothpicks in our mouths.(Boyle 49).
The narrator, in this case, believed that engaging in silly acts was a way of showing they are civilized, while
in reality, they appeared uncultured especially among the elderly persons. The two ladies, in the end, attempt
to welcome the young boys into the mens club, but the young characters were now humbled to realize their
behaviors do not embrace civilization.
