Which environment ethic(s) resonates with you the most? Describe why.
Find and include a link to a current environmental issue (not mentioned in this week's readings and materials) and discuss how different environmental ethics and philosophies are exemplified in this issue.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The focus of all environmental ethics revolves around human beings, particularly with regards to the
fact that all attempts to make the environment sustainable and are established to boost the quality of life led
by human beings. Hence, humans play a fundamental role in outlining the essentiality of environmental
ethics. Ideally, it is apparent that a significant percentage of philosophers makes every effort on a daily basis
to distance themselves from the ideology of anthropocentrism that precisely focuses on the actions executed
by human beings that affect the environment (Sandler, 2017). For instance, issues concerning pollution,
cases of resource depletion and reduction of biodiversity explain all levels of human risks and action that
may threaten the beauty of the environment. In this connection, the anthropocentric ethic comes out as an
essential concern that encourages the human population to value the importance of environment since it acts
as a landmark for determining the well-being of humans and sustainability of the economy.
The environmental ethic that resonates with me the most is genetic engineering. Genetic modification
of food products using biotechnology defines genetic engineering. Issues that concern moral dilemmas and
social dimensions depicts how people view the ideology of genetic engineering as a critical environmental
issue that needs to be accorded the requisite attention. According to the article written by Hegui (2018),
Is Genetic Engineering A Good Thing For Humanity?, genetic engineering was initially developed by
scientists to establish specific types of drugs that could help create particular kinds of plants and animals that
are preferably contextualized as genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Such organisms are not produced
through the normal reproduction process, and this is perceived to raise moral dilemmas about the ability of
the human beings to tackle issues concerning nature and environmental protection. The article points out that
the application and the use of genetic engineering in todays economy pose a serious risk to species
extinction and the survival of both natural plants and animals (Hegui 2018). Therefore, it is prudent to take
precautions to avoid the risk of species extinction in as much as genetic engineering may contribute to the
development and sustenance of the economy.
