Introduction
The issue of indigenous activism has been a touchy within Canada over the years. The action had
gained momentum in the recent past as people affiliated to the group exert sustained actions towards
ensuring that they are accorded the appropriate levels of respect which will, otherwise, enable them to attain
high qualities of life and, thereby, attain better interactions with others. One area which indigenous activism
has been vocal about is in regards to the missing indigenous women and girls as a result of genocide (
Monchalin, Marques, Reasons & Arora, 2019). However, there have been serious questions touching on the
media coverage of the problem. Of significant view, is that the media most often puts focus on the interests
of people and only uses the indigenous people as the political weapon. The narrative aims to show how the
media portrays indigenous people and how the pipeline works.
Discussion
One problem showcased in the representation of the issues of the indigenous people is the much
focus which is put on side-shows of the act as opposed to the real victimization which actually occurred. For
instance, in the Guardian article of June 7th 2019, a coverage is provided regarding a group of riders taking a
12,000 mile journey as a way of showcasing to the world the discontent because many indigenous girls and
women missing (Dunne, 2019). While the article is clear to indicate that they are missing because of alleged
sex trafficking, it seems to concentrate much on the ride. Thus, the aim of the article is to create a pathos
effect without the logos tenet (Dean, 2015). The audience is not fed much with concrete information
pertaining to the problems facing such women with the need to invoke their interest in being willing to assist
in any way they might see fit.
