1.0 Background

Nursing colleges and universities have been concentrating on molding modern nurses, who will blend well with new development. Upon graduation, higher education institutions have ensured that student nurses will have the required clinical skills to operate in any professional field. Western University is among the nursing schools that have been striving to improve the knowledge and the credibility of its nursing students through the patient centered Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The course has been instrumental in ensuring that students will experience real-life clinical scenarios. However, focusing on clinical competence by the institution has been at the expense of a modern nursing student's critical feature: written and verbal communication skills. The current clinical setting involves the increased flow of information between medical providers, management, and patients. That is, there is a massive traffic flow of information among medical providers as they execute their mandate. Besides, contemporary patients demand information concerning their ailments and their progress. In continuation, there has been growth in communication between nurses and the management of the clinical settings. Data is emerging as a critical component every medical provider requires in the course of his or her duty. Communication skills, both written and verbal, are a crucial requirement for every professional nurse. The neglect of this essential component by Western University's patient centered Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program has been resulting in the production of nursing professionals who cannot communicate effectively in their professional field. This research explores the educational gap of written and verbal communication skills among Western University's nursing graduates.
