At the beginning of the 19th Century, various American Indian children attended church or government-operated boarding schools where they were strictly prohibited from speaking in their native language. These institutions were mainly founded to eliminate American Indian ways of living and replacing with American culture. Consequently, many children became separated from family along with their cultural ways for long periods and in some instances, for several years.  One of the most significant battles in the history and development of the state of Minnesota was the U.S- Dakota war of 1862. The war resulted in the creation of a division within the Dakotan community, mainly attributed to federal policies towards acculturation of Native Americans.
