Due date:
Week 4: On or before Monday, 26August, 2018 at 11:59pm WST
Marks: 40% Word limit:
Approximately 2,500 – 3,000 words (not including references)
You are required to:
1.
Provide a 200-300 word annotation of each of five (5) significant research articles, reports
or
book chapters that
investigate one aspect of reading or reading instruction (e.g.,
content‐area reading; comprehension of informational texts; motivation; close reading;
reading
expository texts; teaching IT reading skills; phonological awareness; phonics
instruction;
fluency).
2.
No more than two articles or book chapters should be drawn from those mentioned in your
unit outline or on the Blackboard site (i.e., you must demonstrate that you can do your own
literature search).
3.
Follow the annotations with a brief discussion which draws together the ideas from the
research you
have reviewed and identifies the implications this research has for classroom
practice, particularly as it applies to your chosen context (approximately 700 – 1,000 words).
An annotated bibliography differs
from a literature review. A guide to writing an annotated
bibliography is available via the Library at
http://intranet.ecu.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/20610/annotated_bibliography.pdf. There is also a link from the assessments folder in Blackboard.
Articles should be drawn from scholarly sources; that
is, they should have been written by experts in
the field and have been subject to peer review. They
should report on recent research (preferably the last ten years and no older than the last fifteen years).
You do not need to fully understand any
statistics reported in the article, but you should be able to
discuss their interpretation and your discussion should indicate findings relevant to the teaching of
reading. There should be a clear link
between the research and the stated implications for practice.
All pages should be A4 size, typed, with 1½ or double line spacing and wide margins (3.5cm) in
an easily readable font (minimum 12 pt).
Make sure assignments are paginated (have page numbers)
and are clearly labelled with your name
and student ID. It is recommended that you set up a footer
on the page to do this. Appropriate
academic English usage should be demonstrated and all sources
should be appropriately referenced
according to the ECU referencing guide. ECU’s preferred
referencing style is APA (6th).
It is recommended that you use “Endnote” or the “citation” feature in
Word to set up your reference
library and correctly format references. For more information, see
the assignment 1 folder on
Blackboard.
