Teachers employ various teaching techniques in the classroom with the aim of making the students understand the concept quickly and better. Since learning is not essential if the student understands but cannot apply the concept, teachers would want to see that students have the ability to put into practice what they have learned. That can easily be portrayed through various activities such as answering questions and teaching fellow students. However, it is done best through group works. Students are placed in small groups of four to five individuals and given the assignment to work on by the teacher (Burke, 2011). Groupings in the classroom have different importance including the ones explained below.

Group work helps in increasing individual achievement. When students engage in collaborative learning, the results include knowledge acquisition, high retention of the concept and increased reasoning. Working in groups help students to brainstorm over an issue, discuss, and exchange ideas which lead to an in-depth understanding of the material. With groupings, the student can explore what they know, conceptualize the material and refine it to get a new understanding of the material (Smith, 2000). Ideally, members of the groups have a different understanding of the concept and thus when pulled together or each one is given a chance to tell his or her understanding, others get an opportunity to learn from the different reasoning.
