Is Google Making Us Stupid? - Nicholas Carr

The internet, specifically the renowned search engine Google, is one of the key conduits of information that redirects students to different websites that contain varieties of information depending on what the user wants. According to Nicholas Carr in his article, Is Google Making Us Stupid, he expounds on the possible effects that have affected the human though processes in ways that differentiate from traditional reading of books. The manner in which information is provided to the user in the internet age has changed our brain processes in analyzing information. This essay looks to provide an in-depth analysis of Nicholas article given his critical perception of the effects that have affected the human ability to read.

Nicholas Carr employs the use of an excerpt from the movie A Space Odyssey (2001) to create the tone of his essay. He likens the effect that the computer is rewiring the human mind to the plot in the movie where the supercomputer HAL is preventing Dave from disconnecting the memory circuits that control the computer. The human mind is not disappearing as it occurs in this movie, instead humans are changing their way of thinking especially in the processes that involve reading. One of the ways that Carr identifies is the shortening of the time span that his mind concentrates while reading an article or a book.
