Paper Prompt 1
In an essay, compare the use of rhetoric in lyrics by two different artists. The lyrics chosen should focus on the same, specific theme. How does the artist use rhetoric in a way that works for the author’s approach to the theme?
Develop your response into a comparative analysis of rhetoric. Use evidence from the lyrics to support your analysis. In your essay, clearly explain how the artist uses literary devices and rhetorical appeals to support their particular approach to the theme identified in the lyrics.
A rhetorical analytical essay is simply an essay that looks at a piece of literature closely and seeks to prove a position taken through persuasive strategies.
A rhetorical analysis essay generally asks students to do two things:
1) figure out the writer is trying to accomplish,
2) and identify what writing tactics the author is utilizing to accomplish it.
The assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. Your task with this assignment is to determine the exact goal of each song and to explore, on paper, the strategies, “literary devices and rhetoric” used by the writer to achieve this goal.

1302 Paper guidelines:
Unless stated otherwise, you may not use outside sources for your papers, except for a dictionary and the song lyrics.
In your papers, I want to read your thoughts and ideas in response to the paper prompts, not other people's ideas.
All papers need a work’s cited page. Without one, it is considered plagiarism. Papers that do not have a work’s cited page will be automatically docked 20 points.Do not rely heavily on summary in your papers. In your papers, I am looking for critical analysis, and summary is not the same as analysis. In this class, analysis is developed as an extended rhetorical essay; you are essentially making an argument about the two articles and their use of rhetoric. You are arguing that your perspective—an interpretation, an evaluative judgment, or a critical evaluation—is a valid one.Quotations marks should have parenthetical citations. Thesis statements should reflect: 1. The main idea of the paper 2. your slant or perspective on the style and tone used in the articles by the authors.
Basic formula for a thesis statement to analyze literature is
a Specific topic + Attitude/Angle/Argument = Thesis
b What you plan to argue + How you plan to argue it = Thesis
The aforementioned thesis should be present in the introduction.
Paragraphs need topic sentences. Each paragraph and topic sentence should support the thesis.Be conscientious of your word choice and how it affects the tone in your paper. Do not use first or second person pronouns. Words such as you, your, we, our, me, my, us, and I do not belong in formal academic papers.Plagiarism: I take plagiarism and cheating very seriously. In my course, a plagiarized assignment will automatically receive a "0." I will discuss the plagiarism with you first. After our discussion, I will determine if I will give you another chance to rewrite the assignment for partial credit.
