Rangan, K., Chase, L., & Karim, S. (2015). The truth about
CSR. Harvard Business Review, 93(1/2), 40-49.
The key obligation of any company is to maximize the wealth of the
shareholders in the company as Rangan et.al (2015) argues in their article, The truth about CSR, then again
with increased consumer knowledge of the market dynamics it has become crucial
for companies to go out of the way to craft positive public image which is the
basis of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This paper will therefore do an
in-depth analysis of the article understanding of the concept true CSR while
revealing actual applications by companies to show the positive impacts of
encouraging corporate involvement in the society. The idea that companies have
misused the idea of CSR to further their profit making goals centralizes the
ideas of the article.
The nature of the
article could have been written on the backdrop of increased organizational
involvement on various theatres of CSR that produced different results. From
the authors’ arguments we note the emphasis on a company ability to decide on
what kind of social responsibilities to take on, the decisions made by the
board of the company, in this case is considered to be different legal person
from its owners, should not be affected by what the major stakeholders believe
should have been done. Actually the checks and balances gained by a company by
proactive involvement in the social welfare change of it environ, will eventually
be gainful to the company.
