Martin Luther King: Racial Injustice

As we approach 19^th January, a day in which we celebrate and recognize the iconic Martin Luther King, it is high time our country should take note of how racial divisions is still a critical concern. In his days, Martin Luther was the leading protagonists against social injustices as he spread his dream of a united country that respects human rights irrespective of their race. Half a decade later, the current society cannot claim to have fully eradicated racial injustices given the numerous cases that are reported daily through the media. There is no doubt that advancements in technology have helped in identification of racial tension in our society in the same breath it has helped in spreading messages for ending discriminatory behavior. Per se, this essay looks to evaluate the concept of racial injustice in the contemporary society by incorporating the ideologies that Martin Luther addressed during his activism in the 1960’s.

One of the key principles in Martin Luther’s address of social injustices was the key role that love plays in our society to help fight social injustices such as racial discrimination. In as much as the government and activist groups initiate social programs that are meant for addressing racial injustice, the vital approach that would help alienate the major cause of racial injustice should be the ability to show love to our neighbors. The current divide that exists between different civil rights umbrellas on how to approach racial injustice, i.e., to either adopt civil measures or retaliation, does not aid the system’s ability in fighting racism. This has led to the creation of an environment that encourages more tolerance rather than healing and improved cohesion between people of different racial background. For this reason, racial discriminatory experiences are still a norm in our society due to the reluctance to understand and implement corrective measures instead of simply being indifferent until a new case goes viral (Mulhall, 2014).
