Employee relations are important because they champion for the employees' rights for instance in the cases of termination and at times in pay rise negotiations. The importance of the engagement efforts by HSOs is to avoid friction with the employee Unions. An example is to negotiate for the unification of the unions if employees subscribe to more than one unions. The open engagement also helps the HSOs develop a relationship and gain a negotiation advantage.
