THINK about the following questions: What role does epidemiology play in our understanding of the effect of inequality on our societies? What about actions to address these inequalities? You do NOT have to write a complete response to those questions for your homework.

ANSWER this way:

Choose TWO ideas or concepts from the entire semester in Principles of Epidemiology and show how that idea or concept might play a role in understanding or addressing inequality. Please try and use specific examples from the video or other readings on inequality that you might be interested in. Optional: What other suggestions or comments do you have to answer the larger questions above (under THINK)?

Examples:

A. Dr. Wilkinson discusses how their group developed and index of social and health problems that (supposedly) encompasses a number of factors together. The conceptual tool of positive predictive value might be used to improve methods to apply this index to different parts of the world (i.e. not Europe/US). Is the validity and reliability of that index similar among different geographic regions? It might lead to changes in either the index methods or the way in which it is applied. B. The idea of ethical research might be important to how we evaluate the effects of inequality. Communities and individuals, such as low-income neighborhoods, should be involved with and informed about health conditions associated with inequality.

Definition : The distribution of a health condition refers to patterns shown by that disease in a population: how common, who is likely to get it, how it has changed over time.

Example: In the United States, infant mortality has a different distribution among African-American mothers than White mothers-the rate is higher, and some parts of the US have higher rates than others.
