The key causes of the constitutional crisis were the ruling parties lack of a majority in the senate-house. The Senate cut supply by not allowing the government to spend money. This would call for an election. Because both legislative houses had equal power, each party aimed that the house in which their representation was low to go to an election with the hope of increasing their representation. Eventually, the dismissal of an elected prime minister was the cause of the crisis. The governor general had the power to do so in the name of the queen. The public was angered by this leading for demands to make Australia a republic.
