In your own words, try to explain Newman's theory of the convergence of diverse probabilities as a rational basis for belief in God. What is your own position on whether God exists or not? (you do not have to be Catholic/Christian, or belong to any religion, or believe in God or a higher power to go to St. Peter's or to take this class - the latter part of this question is subjective - I simply wa ...[Show More]

Cardinal Newman's theory is that we have pointers to a certain order existing in the universe. He also argues that these truths help us deduce events from the past that brought us here and those taking us in the future. Furthermore, he argues that in the human knowledge base, there exist things we know from seeing and those we haven't seen but know exist. He cites the example of other members of the galaxy and the existence of other creatures even though we haven't seen them all. From this, he argues that the order of the universe had to be explainable and its existence definitely has a source (Kasper, 2011). There is no way the many possibilities could subscribe to the same coincidence or a range of coincidences that end up in agreement to form a system. So basically God has to be one of the things we know exists even though we have not seen them. He says that just like one believes cities exist where they once were even though they have never visited again, we have a history and a future that is unknown yet known to exist just like our perception of God. Because the two, past and future are Gods definition that is the beginning and the end. God exists. I tend to agree with the cardinal. Even one coincidence, for instance, the creation of man is hard for science to explain. The coincidence that most of the creatures were formed from coincidences is therefore harder. Furthermore, that the coincidence coincides with other universal coincidences like a natural habitat for these creatures and a mysterious self-sustaining system not to mention the other universal phenomena we are still exploring. It should be remembered the world was still flat till a few years back when it was discovered to be actually spherical and physics discovered forces that hold creatures in place. Now all this can't be merely coincidental.
