Leadership models
Leadership is one of the most complex and multifaceted practices. It has received significant attention over many years and has more importance than ever in the fast-paced and increasingly globalized world today (Benmira & Agboola, 2021). Nonetheless, due to the complexities of the subject, the debate on leadership remains fascinating and baffling. There has been development in the various approaches to leadership. Some of the most recent models of leadership include.
Transformational leadership model
Transformational leadership focuses on motivating followers by aligning the leader’s goals with those of the team members. As a result, many people who work with transformational leaders work to prioritize the success of the organization over their interests.
Transactional leadership
This is a reward-based model. In other words, transactional leaders ensure that employees behave well because they exchange resources for it. The leader praises employees for their efforts and chastises them when they fail to attain their goals. In this circumstance, the perspective of the subjects about the equality and fairness of the exchange with the leader is critical.
Servant leadership
Servant leadership describes the role of a leader as serving the needs of others. The primary objective of a leader under this approach is to develop employees and guide them to reach their goals.
Leadership models in the nineteenth century focused on identifying the personality characteristics and other qualities of successful leaders, as well as the leader’s intrinsic features. For instance, the key assumption of the Great Man theory of the 1940s is that leaders are born rather than trained or created. Past models of leadership describe leadership as a unidirectional, top-down process of influencing with a clear division between followers and leaders. An increasingly sophisticated and challenging environment shapes contemporary models. This necessitates a new era of leadership that focuses on the deep linkages among the subjects, the leader, the environment, and the system as a whole, emphasizing the underlying leadership qualities of the followers.
